Weight Watchers Wednesday

I gained 1.6 big ones in the past two weeks... which I think is pretty darn good considering all of the chips and queso I ate during my trip to TX... and the candy at the airport when I was rerouted... and the chocolate that 3 people decided to give me for Christmas. (I gave the chocolate that was left to our neighbor tonight just to get it out of reach!)

I had promised to give you insight into each week's pamphlet, but honestly, all of that typing got to be too much... and I think I lost most of you doing it. So-- week 3: Stay ahead of hunger-- teaches you to recognize the signals your body is sending you and not to go to long between meals. Week 4: Habits of successful members-- gives examples of members that had lost weight and what they have done to keep it off.

On to your weekly recipe:

Creamy Cucumber Dip
Ingredients:
2 cups low-fat plain yogurt
1/2 cups reduced calorie mayonnaise
1 tsp table salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 1/2 cups English cucumber, diced
1/2 cups red onions, diced
6 tbsp mint leaves, fresh, chopped
6 tbsp dill, fresh, chopped

Instructions:
In a medium bowl, stir together yogurt, mayonnaise, salt, cumin, and cayenne pepper until smooth.

Add cucumber, onion, mint, and dill; stir to mix.

Points value: 2; Servings: 8

Wedding Wednesday: Children

With the growth of our guest list, the number of children attending our wedding has skyrocketed. I think it's very important to have activities that will keep children busy during the festivities. While browsing blogs, I stumbled upon this great personalized wedding coloring book. After Halloween, I picked up twenty packs of crayons for a total of 50 cents! I thought using this coloring book would be a fun, personal way to get kids involved.

Another idea I had was to have these Paper-source suitcases filled with fun items and toys. I'm afraid that may only work if we designate a children's table.
Another idea... covering the table with craft paper that the children can draw on... or individual placemats they can draw on, if we don't have a designated table.

Now is when I reach to you to see what you are planning on doing or did to entertain the children attending your reception. Hire a sitter? Have a children's table? What activities?

ZZZZZZZZ..........

Just finished printing and stuffing wedding website inserts into our save-the-date envelopes... and printing and applying the labels I made for the outside... and then realized we don't have enough save-the-dates for the now gazillion invited guests. Screw it. Sorry J's work-- you're not getting one.

Now... off to bed.

News on the Wedding Front

As of Christmas Day, we had seven months until the wedding! 2008 has flown by, so I'm anxious to knock out a few items on our checklist. When I got to thinking about it, I realized that I have neglected to give you an update on the wedding planning. Without further ado, here is what has been accomplished and what hasn't:
  • Both sites have been paid in full-- deposits and fees!
  • Photographer has been booked-- deposit has been paid!
  • Caterer has been booked-- meeting and deposit is scheduled for January!
  • Cake has been booked-- deposit has been paid!
  • Florals-- still need to work this one out. Ugh.
  • Flatware and glasses have been bought-- still need to rent plates and wine glasses.
  • Officiant has been booked-- already started discussing our ceremony ideas, briefly.
  • Dress has been bought-- looking into alterations.
  • Bridesmaid dresses have been bought and work!
  • Bridesmaid gifts have been bought, including shoes and jewelry.
  • Flower girl dresses have been bought and work!
  • Flower girl gifts have been bought-- still need shoes.
  • Ring bearer outfit has been bought.
  • Father has tried on suits and knows his size-- plans to buy suit in January.
  • Save-the-dates have been lined and stuffed-- website inserts just need to be printed!
  • Invitation info has been submitted to designer. (Won during a Style Me Pretty giveaway!)
  • Out of town bags have been purchased-- still need to get stuffings.
  • Registries have been started-- need to amp them up a bit.
  • Wedding website has been created.
  • Room blocks have been created.
  • Location map has been created.
  • Favors have been bought.
  • Guest list has been decided. The additional 73? It turned into 109. But, we're doing it. While we're at it, we're adding another 25. Geez. It's what he wants, so I'm compromising. So much for the somewhat intimate 85 attendees.
What am I missing? I feel like I have a ton of things piled in our guest room that I didn't even list here. I think I've gotten a lot accomplished, but I've been in somewhat of a planning funk. I'll feel better when our save-the-dates are out the door, I think.

Question of the day... how many have you or did you invite?

Back in Action

I did not arrive back from my trip last Monday as planned, but I did arrive safe and sound in the middle of the night on Tuesday. "They" say you can tell a lot about a person by how they handle lost luggage. I say you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat other people during trying situations. I was absolutely appalled at how my fellow fliers were treating each other and the flight crew. It saddened me, actually. Here we were, days before Christmas, in a difficult situation, and people were treating each other horribly. The holiday spirit was definitely not in the "air", so to speak.

I think what amazed me the most was how children (and teens) were reacting to the situation. They yelled at their parents; they screamed at the flight crew. It was insane. I actually heard two children yelling at their mother because they were going "to miss a whole day of skiing" because we couldn't land... as though she had any control over the matter. An older teen screamed at her father that he MUST tell the flight crew to get her luggage off right that second while we sat at the gate after being rerouted... she screamed!

So... tell me: Is there such a thing as rotten kids, or were they taught that treating people that way is acceptable?

I've Been Tagged!

As I mentioned on Thursday, Bridechka tagged me.
Here are the rules:
1. Link to the person that tagged you
2. Post the rules on your blog
3. Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself

6 things about me....

1. I like to think I'm organized, but I actually live in organized chaos. I have too much "stuff" to be organized. In fact, I think I'm a hoarder. I can organize anyone else's things, but mine will always remain only half-way organized. (reminder to self-- think of this post when creating your resolutions!)

2. I have just now realized I don't really care for pictures of myself when taken from the left. I never knew I had a "bad side".

3. I am too generous. I am always getting gifts for people... most of the time for no reason and often when I have no money. This also applies to my time-- I'll give to anyone but myself. (reminder to self-- think of this post when creating your resolutions! Scaling this back would help your wallet!)

4. I must be a horrible person because every time I have dated a short guy I've found a reason for it to not work out. (I don't think I am vain, but maybe I'm wrong. Please don't hate me.) I'm short-- very. For some reason, (maybe it's the midget kid factor) I just couldn't ever let it get very far. I also feel like the ones I dated latched onto me like I was the only woman left on earth... maybe that had something to do with it, too. I'll blame it on that.

5. When I start a personal project (meaning not work or friend related), I have horrible follow-through. I'm miserable at it. Especially craft projects. I love to think I'm crafty, but apparently I'm too damned scared to start anything crafty. I might even buy a ton of supplies and then never start. (like stamping, cardmaking... or the new Gocco)

6. I use ellipses way too much. I am extremely conscious of this, yet I can not make myself stop. I think I have a problem.

I hope my revelations don't make you run away! And, I've decided not to tag anyone because I lose track of who's been tagged for what. Join in if you feel the urge.

Because I don't like to leave a post without a picture, here are a few not-so-hot pics from the left.

Yuck.

Fabulous Shoe Friday

The shoes I'm featuring this week and not necessarily popular or pretty... but they are certainly fabulously necessary in my world.

These are just about worn out at this point. I wear them all winter long.

These were worn on Sunday of last week...

Along with these...

When you live in the mountains, these shoes are a necessity!

Have a fabulous weekend! I'll see you next week.

Leaving On A Jet Plane...

I am leaving today for Dallas. Cross your fingers for me that my flight doesn't get canceled due to weather.

I can not wait to see my family. I'm having one of those seasons when I am desperate to visit with family... almost to the point of being depressed if I don't. It's kind of odd because when I go to visit, we never really do anything. It's a lot of sitting around and hanging out. Sometimes that's the best kind of trip, though! Oh... and the weather here has been snow, snow and more snow with a high of teens and twenties. When I get there, it's supposed to be 70 degrees. Heck yeah!!

I am scheduling a couple of posts for while I'm gone, as I won't really have much computer access while I'm there. It might actually be nice to check out for a bit.

Bridechka
tagged me on Sunday, and I was saving my response until I was gone. Stay tuned!

Weight Watchers Wednesday: Momentum Wk 2

After three weeks of gaining little by little (a total of 1.8 ell-bees), I finally had a loss at the weekly weigh-in on Monday... 2.2! This week's loss brings me to a total of 14 pounds lost. This month has been a struggle, so my basic thinking is "get through December and you'll be okay"! It's important to remember that you will not lose weight every week. You have to take the good with the bad and be okay with an occasional set-back.

As promised, I plan to give you some insight into the second week pamphlet of the new Momentum program. This week's was called "Start Moving More", so I don't think I need to elaborate too much.
Per WW:
Understanding Why Activity is Important:
Activity burns calories. Plus, it builds, preserves, and tones muscle tissue. Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat does-- even when the body is at rest. Exercise helps you look and feel great while losing weight.

And then there's activity's biggest benefit: It will help you keep the weight off once you've lost it. 90 percent of people who've kept weight off successfully include regular activity in their lives.

If you feel like you're working out, you are. All types of movement count-- aerobic activities, strength training, yoga, sports, and other flexible activities. Even housework and yardwork count!

Starting out? Start slow. Exercise is probably very new to many of you. And for many of you who are actively exercising now, activity was very new to you, too, when they were first getting started.

Jumping straight into an intense exercise regimen when you've been otherwise sedentary is a mistake. The notion of "no pain, no gain" is a thing in the past. The better approach is to start slow.

All at once or break it up? Smaller bouts of exercise added up provide the same benefits as longer sessions, as long as the bits are at least 10 minutes long. So, if breaking up your exercise into bouts is more doable for you, do it. Just track each bout, and at the end of the day, add them up.

Now... for your weekly recipe!

Seven Layer Mexican Dip
Ingredients

  • 1 cup fat-free sour cream
  • 2 Tbsp reduced-sodium taco seasoning
  • 9 oz fat-free bean dip, about 1 heaping cup
  • 6 oz guacamole, about 3/4 cup
  • 1/4 cup low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 medium scallion(s), chopped
  • 1 small tomato(es), chopped
  • 6 medium olive(s), black, sliced

Instructions

  • Combine sour cream and taco seasoning; mix well.

  • Spread bean dip on bottom of a 12-inch round glass serving bowl or edged-platter. Top with guacamole, sour cream, cheese, scallions, tomatoes and olives. Yields about 1/4 cup dip per serving.

When to Alter (Not to Be Confused with Altar)

I've lost so much weight (for my size) that my amazing dress is now huge on me. Really. Where it was supposed to hug, it now hangs. Not as attractive as it should be.

I live in a small town with one alterations place that does not do wedding dresses. I know of a great person back "home" in AR that is willing to do my dress. The key question is... when to alter? Direct flights out of my town only really occur regularly during ski season. Otherwise, I have to drive 3 and a half hours to Denver International Airport to fly out-- which usually happens in the wee hours of the morning. I have until the first week of April to leave and come back if I want to fly out of the local airport. Our wedding is in July.

I found a great flight for ... you won't believe this... $252 round trip!! BUT, it's in January. OR, I can fly out in March for $314, which still isn't bad. BUT, I could use the $62 towards the alterations. BUT, that would be a whole six months before the wedding. I don't plan to lose a lot of weight in those six months, but you never know what will happen. Even 5 more pounds might make a difference.

So, the key question is... when to alter?

Real Wedding Inspiration

This wedding featured last week on Blush is amazing. I love the girls' dresses and BOOTS, the mums, everything.

Weight Watchers' New Plan

I had some questions regarding Weight Watchers' new plan, Momentum. If you have no desire to hear about Weight Watchers, feel free to skip this lengthy post.

Over the next nine weeks, in my Weight Watchers Wednesday posts, I will try to give you a snippet of the pamphlet I'll be receiving in my Weight Watchers meetings. As the new program was just implemented nationally this past week, I received the first week's pamphlet at my meeting last Monday. To catch you up, I'm giving you last week's snippet today:

Per Weight Watchers:
The key to successfully losing weight and keeping it off is to find a sustainable plan. Something that doesn't leave you hungry. Something that doesn't leave you deprived. Something healthy. Successfully losing weight and keeping it off is not an activity you do for a few weeks and then stop. To truly succeed, you need to find an effective plan that you can make second nature. One that allows you to live your life the way you want...

The Momentum plan is the plan. It combines the very best of nutrition research with 45 years of experience helping million of members around the world lose weight. We'll teach you a more satisfying way of eating- guiding you toward healthy foods that will help you feel fuller longer. And when you're satisfied, you'll have staying power on your side. You'll be more likely to stick with it. And if you stick with it, you'll be more likely to succeed...

The Momentum plan puts you in control and helps you build the skills you need to achieve your goals and live healthier.

Every day, we're faced with many food choices. Which foods should we eat, and how much of them should we have?
  • The Points System helps you evaluate the weight-loss impact of foods
  • The Filling Foods help you keep hunger at bay
  • The Good Health Guidelines help you make sure you're meeting your body's needs
  • And, the weekly Points Allowance helps you prevent feelings of deprivation
Every food has a Points value. Points values serve as a shorthand way to understand calories in and calories out, and also take into account fat grams and fiber, which are important for good health.

Why pay attention to fat & fiber? Foods that are high in fat tend to be less healthy and have more calories. Points values factor in fat so that they'll help limit the amounts of these foods that you eat. Similarly, naturally occurring fiber-rich foods tend to be more nutritious, and lower in calories. Adding fiber to the equation guides you to these options, because their Points values are lower.

How many Points values should you eat a day? Use this to determine your daily Points target:
1. What do you weigh? Enter the first 2 digits of your weight in pounds.
2. Are you Female? Add 2
Are you Male? Add 8
3. How old are you?
17-26: Add 4
27-37: Add 3
38-47: Add 2
48-58: Add 1
Over 58: Add 0
4. How tall are you?
Under 5'1": Add 0
5'1"- 5'10": Add 1
Over 5'10": Add 2
5. Do you spend most of your work day:
Sitting down: Add 0
Occasionally sitting, but mainly standing: Add 2
Walking most of the time: Add 4
Doing physically hard work most of the time: Add 6
6. For nursing moms only, are you:
Solely breastfeeding: Add 10
Supplementing breastfeeding with some solid foods or formula: Add 5

Add up your points. If your total is less than 18, your daily points target is 18; if your total is more than 44, your daily points target is 44.

Stay ahead of hunger by choosing Filling Foods. Knowing the Points values of foods will help you make smart choices. Sometimes, though, foods have low Points values, but lack staying power. Five jelly beans, for example, have 1 Points value. But how effectively will jelly beans keep you feeling satisfied? Before long, you may need another snack, for more Points values.

Filling Foods, on the other hand, keep hunger at bay longer. They're great sources of protein; or they're packed with water, fiber, and sometimes air- elements that fill you up and keep you satisfied.

Choose foods that are Filling Foods, and you'll stay satisfied even as you're taking in fewer calories so you can lose weight. People tend to eat the same volume of food each day-- by filling their stomachs with food, they avoid feelings of hunger. If you eat foods that are high in volume, but low in calories, you'll feel satisfied even as you do what you need to do to lose weight: cut calories. Filling Foods are low in energy density-- low in calories relative to their volume. They'll fill you up in fewer calories.
Examples of Filling Foods:
  • Whole-wheat pasta, brown rice, potatoes and grains
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Whole-grain cereals-- without added sugar, nuts or dried fruit
  • Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and meat substitutes, such as tofu
  • Fat-free milk and milk products
  • Soups, made with filling foods
Filling Foods help you stretch your Points values. For example-- these two breakfasts contain the same Points value, but which do you think will make you fuller?

Breakfast 1-
2 slices of toast, no butter or spread: 4 points

Breakfast 2-
Omelet with fruit:
1 egg: 2
1 egg white: 0
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms: 0
nonstick spray: 0
1 slice of fat-free cheese: 1
1 1/2 cups of strawberries: 1
Total: 4 points

That's it for this week's "lesson". Stay tuned for next week's on Wednesday!

Turquoise Peg Board... Be Still My Heart

This beauty of a wrapping station found via A Life's Design has me going ga-ga. I could use some turquoise peg board. I could use a wrapping station, period.

Which Beer Is Better... For You?

Not that any beer is GOOD for you-- but if you like to drink beer, you might as well be drinking one that won't give you a ginormous beer belly. Right?

Check out this post on FitSugar for the top 10 highest and lowest caloric beers. I'm happy to say the Amstel Light I was downing on Halloween made second place on the low end of the scale.

Can You Be In Love With Furniture?

Wonderful World of Color

Have you noticed a lot of magazines are featuring blue and green holiday decorations this year? You know I'm on board! I have been drooling over each and every one this year. Seriously... can Amy Butler ever do wrong? I want to move in. (As seen in Home Companion)

I think I want to make her fabric Christmas trees... and redecorate.

Fabulous Shoe Friday

Anthro, of course.

And these beauties are on sale! (As J would say, "That means you have to buy them, right?"

Holiday Parties

Five out of seven years of holiday parties, J and I have had our company parties on the same night. Oddly enough, both companies did their parties a week earlier this year, and they still fell on the same night. So, last Saturday after decorating the tree, we went to our parties. My party was at the top of the mountain, so we had to take the gondola up. We had a great time. We only got a few pictures of us, but I'm sure you'll be able to tell how much fun I was having.

I wore my sequined JCrew sweater tank, Joes Jeans, a little jacket, and my cheapy-fabulous Payless black d'orsay heels. I met the man in the picture with me ages ago during my cocktailing days. He plays in both Worried Men and Sundog in Steamboat. He plays the electric violin-- something I mentioned I've always wanted to do in my 7 Things About Me post.
How much fun am I having? Seriously.
I hope you're enjoying the holiday spirit!

I've Got Spirit. Yes, I Do! I've Got Spirit...

How 'bout you? (I just couldn't help myself. It's the cheerleader in me.)

I finally seemed to get a little Christmas spirit in me. I don't know why I've had such a hard time this year. I thought I'd share with you a bit of the decor I finally got around to putting up.

First, I'll show you our tree... our 13 foot tree. That's right. J cut it down up on Gore Pass last Monday. The tree was a beetle-kill tree that had just started to die, so we saved it from burning the forest down in the future. We didn't put it in the stand until Tuesday. J started putting lights on it on Wednesday, and then I finally got around to decorating it on Saturday.

Outside our townhouse:
From our kitchen: *Yes, that's J laying on the floor.

A little perspective as to how freakin' tall this tree is:
J wearing sweats (eek!) and putting lights on the tree: *this has never happened before
Decorated in all neutrals this year & J putting the topper on:
My 12 Days of Christmas plates above the cabinets: *the Ball jars are always up there

Is anyone else having a hard time getting motivated this holiday? I feel like I'm struggling big time.
